the turning of an atheist
in undergraduate study, i read my fair share of fair share of philosophical dialogues, treatises, and meditations. one particular reading that stood out was the debate between anthony flew, r.m. hare, and basil mitchell titled “the falsification debate on religious belief”. flew, at the time just a 25 year old oxford university student, argued that unless theists could state the conditions which would falsify their beliefs, those beliefs were meaningless. To flew, serious truth claims to reality must be subject to possible falsification. flew would later go on to become one of the twentieth century’s most preeminent atheists.
this past sunday, the new york times magazine featured an amazing article about how anthony flew changed his mind.
