carling cup winners

Filed under: soccer — johnxavier @ 1:16 pm

tottenham hotspur won the carling cup this afternoon in a 2 -1 victory over chelsea at wembley.

yes, it’s only the carling cup… but this is the first trophy i’ve ever seen tottenham win. and this creates momentum for the rest of this season as well as gives meaning to a season plagued by underperformance.

report can be found here.

on the soccer note… the association of football statisticians’ list of the 100 greatest footballer ever.

if you know football, you should be shocked, disgusted, and/or enraged. then again, these are statisticians, and there’s plenty that can’t be quantified in the beautiful game.

tuesday’s thoughts

Filed under: music, news, soccer — johnxavier @ 10:14 pm

- red sox are in the playoffs, patriots are unstoppable, and the new “big three” of the celtics look poised to win the East – it’s a good time to be a new england sports fan…

- oh, the irony

- looks like kanye’s trying even harder to establish street cred among the cool kids with his new blog

- Martin Jol was very very close to having to find himself a new job had the Spurs not come back from nowhere to save a point yesterday

- since their announcement about lp7, i’ve been listening to almost nothing but radiohead

- If you have not seen Sigur Rós in concert , watching this is an imperative

- One of my professor freelances on the side, here’s his product: Congressionalbadboys.com

- From that site: “CREW’s annual most corrupt members of Congress” list

-Weslyan’s Rap Anthem: New Teen Force – “Party On Fountain”

- Congrats to David at Culture of Soccer for getting an article published by Christian Science Monitor

- My new favorite awful video

- Ronaldinho moving to Chelsea?

– [even better] Jose Mourinho to come to Tottenham?

fever pitch

Filed under: literature, soccer — johnxavier @ 7:12 pm

Finally got around to finishing Fever Pitch today. I had held out on reading this book in the first place for so long because of the author’s unabashed allegiance to Arsenal. Hornby’s one of the more engaging writers I’ve read in a while. This is a must read for any and all soccer fans (including Spurs fans like myself).

Hornby constantly refers to ‘football’ as a metaphor, and with the past 36 hours Tottenham and myself have had, I couldn’t agree more.
